Question by Sunshine: Going from being a Corrections Officer to Teaching Kindergarten, anything you think I should know?
Yes, I am going to teach Kindergarten after working in the county Jails for 4 years. I have been told that I would be a great teacher, even from the inmates, it is where my true passion lies. I am not worry as I know that I have a great talent with children and a lot of patience from my previous job experience! I just thought I would take a pole of reactions, since I know this is shocking to some!

Question by schneeballe: Do you see an advantage or value in Montessori preschool and kindergarten?
Hello,
Our 4 year old daughter is in her first year of Montessori preschool. We plan on keeping her in this program for one more year of preschool and then for Kindergarten. I don’t think we’ll continue with Montessori-style education for elementary though. I have read quite a bit about it and I definitely like it though it is expensive at $ 285 month for 3 mornings/ week. Does anyone have any feedback/experience to how their child fared with Montessori preschool/kindergarten compared to a play-based preschool? Thanks!

If you don’t feel that Montessori is right for your child, then by all means, move her, but I think it’s right to let her finish her primary years in the same school. You should look into public Montessori schools in your area if you are concerned about the price. What exactly do you object to?

Get five bottoms (jeans, skirts, etc) and 10-15 tops so he or she can mix and match.
Why the thumbs down? You can get extremely inexpensive clothes from children’s place and their outlets as well…I have four boys and it works for me!

Question by warrior: What is the probability that the sample of kindergarten children has a mean height of less than 40.3 inches?
Kindergarten children have heights that are approximately normally distributed about a mean of 39.6 inches and a standard deviation of 1.6 inches. If a random sample of 28 is taken, what is the probability that the sample of kindergarten children has a mean height of less than 40.3 inches?
i tried (40.39.6)/(1.6/√28) = 2.3155 and that is my z-score.. correct? so then the probability should be .4896 right? wells its not…. what am i doing wrong here?

Answer by Gerry
For one thing, a simple look at the fact that 4.3 > 39.6 should let you know that the answer must be larger than 1/2 so you should notice that your answer is incorrect.
The value 40.3 inches is (40.3 – 39.6) / 1.6 = .7 / 1.6 = .4375 standard deviations from the mean.
The probability that the mean height is less than 40.3 inches is .6991

Question by twin-mami: Those of you thart have Identical Twins, did you put them in the same kindergarten class?
My twins will not go to kindergarten until fall 2010, but I am really debating on weather or not to put them in the same kindergarten class. I want to get advice from parents of identical twins. Thanks.

I AM an identical twin. For the first semester we were in separate classes, then later put together. Try separating them to see how they behave independently. If one of them has problems adjusting, put them in the same class.

Furthermore, is there some kind of exam I will have to take? Thanks

There is a teacher certification test that you will have to take in order to teach. I don’t know if your degree will be enable you to take the test though. I would check with your state about your degree because teachers are also required to intern (unpaid) before they can start teaching.

Question by Tam: How many years of school does it take to become a kindergarten teacher?
What kind of dergree does it take?
Best answer:
Answer by Lena
It can take 3-6 yrs to earn your B.A. or B.S in Education. It depends on your gradees and financial aid situation. You would want to study Early Childhood Educ. If you want to teach english/ social studies, then go for your B.A. But if you want to teach with more emphasis on science/ math, get your B.S. You also need to be dedicated. In some states, you can earn your associates degree and become a teacher. Then, take evening classes (that the Dept of Educ. pays for).

Question by Ana: Did you have a 5 year old who had a hard time with Kindergarten?
Last year, my son had a hard time adjusting to kindergarten. He was restless, bored, and did not follow directions. Teacher said he does not have ADHD she thinks but said he is not focus and one time he fell asleep on his desk. She said that although he’s very solid academically that is why he’s going to first grade in the fall, he takes longer than other students to complete his work. He told me that he does not like school and that it is boring. I worry that history might repeat itself again. Did anyone else have this problem?

Answer by laraelucas
I think all kids react differently to school, primarily depending on what they did before school. If he stayed home with you he was not accustomed to a structured day. If he was in a daycare, maybe the structure was not as rigid as it is in Kindergarten. Either way, I would suggest doing his homework with him and somehow make it fun and give him a lot of reassurance that he is learning and is so smart, and how proud you are. Also be sure he is getting enough sleep at night – 10 hours is about right. Also be sure he is getting a good breakfast that provides him with energy. Encourage him to be excited about going back to school, and make it a “fun” thing so he isn’t so hesitant to go back. Good luck!
