Q&A: Duagthers fundrasier, kindergarten, People at work to buy?

Question by ariesalways411: Duagthers fundrasier, kindergarten, People at work to buy?
My daughter is 5 and in kindergarten. She just received her first fundraiser. A small catolage of pizza, cookies, treats, kitchen gadgets. How do I ask people to take a look…I know these things are expensive, I only plan on asking a few people at my work that I know would be able to afford it. But I dont want any one to feel pressured.
She only needs one sale to get a prize. And Im sure that will be what we get, lol.

No one should feel pressured..just hand it to your friends a family and say hey–my daughter has a fundraiser for school .. do you see anything youd be interested in? Then that is that

  1. Ask friends and family first. Remember when you bring items to work for people to buy stuff from your kids you will have to buy from them in the future. If you do take it to work the best thing to do is post it in your lunch room. Ask your supervisor if you allowed to do this 1st.

  2. Either post it on the bulletin board or lay it in a prominent place on your desk. Or leave it on the table at the staff lounge.

  3. I’ve let my co-workers know my son has a fundraiser, if they would like to look at the books to let me know. But there is no pressure and please don’t feel obligated to buy anything.

Note * Some employers do not even allow you to ask your co-workers to buy fund raising items. Be careful if that is your employer.

  4. If you feel obligated, buy something your self to help the school and get your daughter her prize. Ask a few close family members if you want But I would stay away from work. First, that stuff is awful! Second, in today’s economy; I don’t feel comfortable asking people for money the probably don’t have.

  5. I hate these things..I’ve been having to deal with them for 12 years already and this year I refused to do it anymore. I hated asking anyone and doing it at work makes people feel uncomfortable. What I suggest is you buy a few things yourself and call it a day.

  6. I have a NO SALE policy. My 3 kids bring that junk home and I send it right back the next day w/ a note saying “We do not sell things”. With 3 kids selling is just outrageous. Our schools sell in the fall, then for Christmas, then Easter and again in the spring. Not to mention all the different sports teams they are on and the selling that is “required” for that.

The schools should not be allowed to do this. I know some of you are going to say that is how they get extra money. It just isn’t safe now a days. I would not let my kids go door to door at all. As far as bringing it into the workplace, if everybody w/ kids bring things in it would just be cheaper to donate the money to the PTA/PTO’s. I mean you sell to 5 people @ work then you feel obligated to buy from the same 5 that bought from you.

This has been our policy since kindergarden. They are now in 2,3, & 11. They all know when they get the sales pkgs to just give them back to the teacher and say we don’t do that in our family.

If you feel that you “HAVE” to buy something so your daughter can get the $ .50 prize, then go ahead and buy something, but please do not push it on other people. In today’s economy who has the cash for things like that.

    Sorry everybody

  7. The 3rd day of school, my kids brought home the dreaded fundraiser. Always expensive low quality stuff that they have to sell to earn prizes. If you don’t want to pressure anyone, then just buy one thing yourself and be done with it. The prizes are cheap little things that are broken by the time they get home. And if you have more than one child, it really adds up!

There will be several fundraisers every year, and if push co-workers and friends to buy from your kid, then you can bet they will expect you to buy from theirs.
I do not let my children participate in these anymore after I saw the huge party on the school grounds for the kids who sold over 50 items, It was ridiculous! Moonwalk, pizza, snowcones, nachos, a few small rides, ponies and a petting zoo. How much of the funds did it take to have the party?? I send it right back to school unopened, and then I write a check for $ 25 to the PTO. That money goes to the school, all of it.
