Question by .: Can you just major in general education to be a kindergarten teacher?
I know some universities don’t have Early Childhood Education available as a major, so I was wondering, can you be a kindergarten teacher with just a major in Education?

I think it depends on where you live. I am a first year teacher in Illinois and I am certified in Elementary Education. This allows me to teach from K-8. Check your state website.

  1. As far as I know, yes. However it would be a good idea to take some early education classes. Even getting an early childhood endorsement so you can teach younger is good. That will give you more options when you graduate, the world of kindergarten teaching can be cutthroat.

    You can even be certified in Early Childhood Education at many community colleges. Look at your options before you make a decision.
